about

I was doing a lot of reading about the missing and murdered women inquiry in Canada (1200 and counting at the time), specifically the website CBC put together that lists the women with their pictures and names, the details of their disappearance and some back stories where they could find them out. It was a pretty dark place to go and writing about it was a catharsis. I can't relate to the victims or what their families go through, but I wanted to express some of my frustration with how Canada has done it's very best to ignore this issue.

lyrics

Where the Assiniboine and the Red River meet
She washes up piece by piece
These city streets and these lonesome dark highways
Are a slaughter house floor.

Chorus:
Their bodies lie in the beds of our rivers
Their voices lie at the bottoms of oceans
That's how it goes when you're native to this land
Red River you won't be missed

The missing, the left for dead
The found and destroyed
Remind me well of scars we push from our minds and
Inflict again and again

Chorus

When you need some shelter from the cold
But your pockets ain't lined with gold
And as old as you are is as old as you'll be
No one will know your name

Chorus
